In an irresistible invitation to lighten up, look around, and live an unscripted life, a Stanford University professor and master of the art of improvisation explains how to adopt the attitudes and techniques used by generations of musicians and actors. These secrets are currently being taught to entrepreneurs, engineers, and first responders in a crisis as well as housewives and Alzheimer caregivers.

Let's face it Life is something we all make up as we go along. No matter how carefully we formulate a "script", it is bound to change when we interact with people with scripts of their own. Improv Wisdom shows how to apply the maxims of improvisational theater to real-life challenges - whether it's dealing with a demanding boss, a tired child, or one of life's never-ending surprises. Patricia Ryan Madson distills 30 years of experience into thirteen simple strategies, including "Say Yes", "Start Anywhere", "Face the Facts", and "Make Mistakes, Please", helping readers to loosen up, think on their feet, and take on everything life has to offer with skill, chutzpah, and a sense of humor.

Improv Wisdom Don't Prepare Just Show Up (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Ryan Madson Bell Tower Books Reviews

This is a remarkable book, and I recommend it to anyone curious about improv, especially if that interest is along the lines of exploring improv as a means for more comfortable social interaction, which was my intent. The compact volume is far more than 'stage tips' or improv 'how-to'. It is a series of 13 well thought out 'Maxims', a discussion of each, examples of their application, and a summary of bullet points comprising the essence of the Maxim. Though excellent groundwork for furthering one's improv skills, I was pleased to discover as I read along that the Maxims are actually very sound life-lessons, with a simple practicality that can be applied to everyday life -- every day. Madson has a way of breaking through shyness and reticence which I found confidence-building, but applying the Maxims does require a recognition of personal responsibility -- both to self and others. I gained from the book an assurance that my perspectives and expressions are, well, just as good as anyone else's, or at least just as worthy of being felt and expressed as anyone else's. Madson describes how the book has been with her for decades, in various formats and longer treatments. I think her final distillation, shaped by years of life-experience and teaching, gets it just about right. I bought the edition, which I found quite readable on screen. I must confess that I copied the set of Maxims and their summary bullet points, printed them out (less than four pages), and keep a copy in my back pocket. I find reading them and embracing them (how can I do that in my life?) uplifting and confidence-building. I always 'clamor for tools!' -- Madson's book is a set of very good ones.
Senior memory or not, I could have sworn I wrote an early, 5-star review for Patricia's accessible gem of a book. But I searched and couldn't find my review — so here it is (again). I begin with two caveats (1) Patricia is an acquaintance and colleague of mine. We're both'Constructive Living' instructors, certified by David K. Reynolds, Ph.D. who originated an approach to living wisely and well, and who wrote another superb book with that title. Patricia was also my daughter's Improv teacher at Stanford University when she was a student there. (2) Because I read the book on publication, my comments must remain as general as my memories. No problem there, since other reviewers have outlined many key points from their fresh read.

I can only speak here about what I know of Patricia's extensive experience and personal practice of the principles she expresses in the book, with heart and clarity. I still have the book on my shelf — it's one of those lifetime keepers that would make my top-ten-ever books in this genre. In a field of innumerable rah-rah self-help books recycling worn slogans and bromides, Patricia Ryan-Madson's IMPROV WISDOM comes as a breath of fresh air — an antidote to idealistic advice, wishful and magical thinking, and abstract ideas — with do-able, practical, realistic reminders.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone interested in living wisely and well.
The title may mislead some, thinking it's about drama, improvisation, written for and about actors. While that may be one audience, it's really a book about modern business and leadership. It's also a very personal book about living a full life and making a difference in the lives of others.

I picked up the book about a week ago, I've read it twice, I know I'll keep coming back to it. It's appealing on so many levels--the plain spoken thoughts, the inspirational examples and stories, the practical exercises to try things out for myself (Already, I've had a few Ta-Dah moments ;-)

To say it will change your life is a little too much and probably not what Ms Madson has intended. To say it's a tool to help you change your own life--should you choose to show up is more appropriate.

Kudo's and thank you to Ms Madson!
